Zetsu tells Pein and the others that, quot;An enemy from Konoha is approaching our hideout. He appears to be very skilled… His name is Maito Gaiquot;.

Itachi needs to clarify who Maito Gai, and explains that he uses taijutsu. Itachi should know this, as he encountered him in Konohagakure and will know him by reputation.

However, how did Zetsu know that Gai was quot;very skilledquot;, or that his name was quot;Maito Gaiquot;? Using his quot;longest rangequot;, Zetsu sensed the Konohagakure shinobi, yet this would seem to be a d#333;jutsu and we'd expect it to merely grant long-distance vision.

Gai's allies did not address him by name, and even if they had off-scren they would have called him quot;Gaiquot;, rather than quot;Maito Gaiquot;. His skill level should also not be something one can visually determine.

How did Zetsu determine Maito Gai's name, when he clearly had no knowledge of who Gai was from reputation (Itachi needed to elucidate)? How did he quot;appear very skilledquot;?

Note: it is of course entirely unavoidable and indeed typical that I would make a typo on a poll in a forum where I don't moderate and so can't edit polls.

He stole Gai's Diary, only explanation i can come up with.

I suppose quot;Golden Byakugamquot; would be a vote for a special power granted by his d#333;jutsu. I'm not convinced that Zetsu uses the Byakugan or any variation thereof, as his eyes do not appear similar and I don't see any room for Zetsu to have a link with Konohagakure. Further to that, the Hy#363;ga don't seem important enough to have a more powerful and completely different version of the Byakugan.

I am guessing that Gai is a renowned ninja throughout all countries. Like Kakashi is, seeing as they appear to be on the same level of skill. Zetsu may have been in some sort of assasin team (like Anbu) before he joined akatsuki where he would have possesed a quot;bingo bookquot;. Or as said, he quot;sensedquot; Maito's power.

Probably somewhere along the way, Gai did his usual thing: screaming and doing that nice guy pose, and maybe also yelled his name?

Other than that, I have no clue how Zetsu could find out about his name. (Gai isn't famous like Copy Ninja Kakashi, is he?)

I'm inclined to say that Kishi created a small plot-hole there...

Well, first off, Gai is a one of a kind type of person with his looks and character...Second, he is very skilled so I'm sure other people have heard of him, the way he looks or something...Maybe Zetsu was told something when he was still at his village and recognized him...Also, we know that Shinobis like Zabuza for example have info concerning quot;skilled' shinobis and I doubt Kakashi's the only one in there and I doubt Gai's not mentionned since he is Kakashi's rival and therefore almost equally strong...

Hehehe. Zetsu's most notable skill so far are his reconnaissance abilities. The most likely concussion is that he keeps tabs on the better shinobi of every village. Intelligence is what makes Akatsuki so bad ass.

The question that arises from this solution is, why did Akatsuki need Itachi to tell them that Gai is a taijutsu specialist? How precisely would you know of Gai as a renowned shinobi and not know that? It seemed to me that Zetsu had no idea who quot;Maito Gaiquot; was, but somehow had the name and skill level.

That's why I said, Kishi probably created a small plot-hole there.

Hatake Kakashi, Momochi Zabuza, Orochimaru, Jiraiya, Tsunade, Sasori, Itachi, Kisame, etc.

Plenty of people have become famous enough where just seeing them is enough for you to know about them, if you have some background knowledge.  And seeing as how Gai is supposedly Kakashi's equal, it's very easy to think/say that Gai is simply famous.
